Qualifications / Qualités requises
The Heritage Specialist is responsible for interpretive and educational program development as well as delivery at the city’s historic sites and museums. The Heritage Specialist is also responsible for ongoing work on heritage projects such as the Oral History project and historical research for educational use. The Heritage Specialist assists with ongoing promotional activities; liaises with volunteers, community groups and facility user groups; assists in the supervision and training of summer staff; receives and directs visitors, answers public inquiries (such as genealogy research) and dispenses public information; performs reception and clerical duties as needed.

1. Research and program development
• Prepare creative, effective and unique educational and interpretive materials, programs and activities
• Maintain and continuously improve museum program material i.e. self-guided brochures, public tours, and interpretive panels.
• Develop curriculum based school programs and outreach programs

2. Delivery of interpretive programs
• Interpret the permanent and temporary exhibits, artifacts and archival collection
• Offer guided tours of the museum and grounds to a variety of audiences
• Conduct school programs, workshops and introductions

3. Assist with training and supervising summer staff
• Provide workshops on interpretive and educational principles, methods and techniques
• Supervise daily operations
• Prepare contents of training manuals

4. Public inquiries, reception and clerical duties
• Ensure the availability, distribution, storage and inspection of program equipment and outreach kits
• Take admissions fees and performs sales of gift shop items
• Keep records of registrations, attendance statistics and reports

5. Assist with promotion and outreach
• Prepare Public Service announcements and flyers
• Distribute information to the public, news papers and radio stations

6. Other related duties

7. Performs work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all City of Ottawa corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
